GEH combines GE’s design expertise and history of delivering reactors, fuels, and services globally with Hitachi’s proven experience in advanced modular construction to offer customers around the world the technological leadership required to effectively enhance reactor performance, power output, and safety.
- GEH operates training facilities in Wilmington, North Carolina and San Jose, California.
- Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), a GE-led joint venture, operates fuel manufacturing facilities in Wilmington and Kurihama, Japan. Through a joint venture with ENUSA, GNF markets fuel for plants in Europe that is manufactured at a facility in Juzbado, Spain.
- GEH SMR Technologies Canada, Ltd., based in Markham,
Ontario, supports the deployment of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) in
Canada.
Company history
A 60-year legacy of innovation
GE has been on the vanguard of electric power technology since Thomas Edison’s first electric light bulb. GE saw the potential for nuclear power from the very beginning and continues to invest in innovative plant designs, culminating in its latest innovation, the BWRX-300.
1957—GE’s first privately financed nuclear power plant in Vallecitos, California (USA) begins operation
1960s—GE becomes involved in constructing and building the boiling water reactor (BWR)
1986—The 50th BWR (Hope Creek, Unit 1) becomes operational
1997—US NRC certifies GE Hitachi advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) design
2007—GE and Hitachi formally establish global alliance by combining their respective power businesses
2020—GEH partners with TerraPower to develop a Natrium reactor, employing its power reactor innovative small modular (PRISM) reactor technology
